April 2017 - Newsletter

Happy Easter!
Now that the clocks have gone forward, isn't it just fantastic to have warmer days and longer evenings to enjoy, and with Easter just around the corner - Spring has definitely sprung! In addition to the traditional Easter delights such as biscuits and hot cross buns, we have a wonderful selection of freshly cut spring flowers, chocolate bunnies, chicks, flowers and a range of lovely locally made chocolate eggs to choose from.

Eggs Galore!
Talking of eggs......Our wonderful geese have recently been laying the most glorious rich and creamy goose eggs.

Did you know that traditionally it is said that geese start laying around February 14th and usually go on laying into August - we hope! In case you didn't know the time you need to boil an egg is of great debate, as is how many mouths will one egg will feed. Well, we reckon that one goose egg equals two hen eggs, and suggest for a soft boil it will need- 9-10 mins, and c13 mins for a hard boil. There is no doubting the virtues in terms of taste and nutrition. Packed with goodness - Eggcellent!

The great escape!
To mark this great time of year we have just unlocked the gates to our open/airy barns and let our small South Devon Heifer herd out to roam freely around the nutritious grassy fields around the Newton Park Estate. These lovely ginger coloured beauties raced out like grease lightening! If you're lucky (depending on their mood!) you will see them whilst enjoying a cuppa in the café .

Tea for two and more.....
Back by popular demand is our super delicious mouth-watering afternoon tea for two. Available Monday - Saturday, 2.30pm - 4.30pm. £30. In addition, we've just launched our new Spring menu so look sharp and check out our new dishes; quinoa risotto, chicken Massaman curry with jasmine rice, open sandwiches or spiced chickpea falafel in a brioche bun. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes are available.

Fresh Fish
Perfect timing! Our lovely fishmonger, Steve Harvey will be here on Wednesday 12th April between 11am - 3pm just in time for a piece or two of his delicious, freshly line caught fish in readiness for a Good Friday treat. Steve's stall is always packed with a great variety, but don't be surprised if haddock is off the menu.

We've been reliably informed (Marine Stewardship Council) that fishing pressure on haddock stocks in the North Sea, Skagerrak and West of Scotland is too high and the biomass is below precautionary levels. However, if you are lucky enough to find sustainable haddock its best to use certified suppliers which are fully traceable.

It's a dogs life!
Fenton and Charles 100% Grain Free Dog Foods and 100% Natural Treats will be here on Sunday the 9th April from 10am.

Fenton and Charles are a family run, Bristol based company who pride themselves on the quality of their products click here for more information and come along to see us this Sunday.
